List of repressors mentioned in testimonies
The following is a document that was never officially published. It is a list of names of people who were involved in abductions, forced detentions, inquisitions, torturing and killings, based on testimonies given before the National Commission on the Disappeared.
Each record in the list includes a person's name, and one or more of the following:
- A code-name or nickname
- A rank
- An affiliation or military unit
- A position or role
- A place where this person was active (usually a military secret detention center)
- Numbers of testimony files in which the name was mentioned
Some of the names are duplicates since there were cases where a military or police man served in different places, or in different roles during the repression. Separate entries were created for those cases where any of the above data items differed. The appearance of a name in this list doesn't constitute implication on any specific account, it merely means that the name (plus other details where they appear) was cited in at least one victim's testimony. For the specific involvement and charges one must read the details as they appear in the testimony files themselves.
The victims of the repression were almost without exception hooded or blindfolded while they were detained and tortured, and their torturers often used nicknames to hide their real identities. In addition, the testimonies were based on what victims overheard while they were detained rather than on printed documents. Consequently, the list is likely to contain errors, misspellings, and minor inaccuracies. Nevertheless, thousands of testimonies were assembled and cross referenced as a big puzzle by the commission to produce this list of names.
The source of the list is a magazine called "El Periodista" which somehow managed to obtain a copy of the list and publish it many years ago. This magazine has since ceased to exist. To minimize the risk of introducing errors, the list is reproduced in Spanish, the language of the original.
A few of the names in this list match names from the list of graduates of the School of the Americas. These are noted in the text. Thanks to Heather Dean for identifying the matches.
Many thanks to Delia Barrera for making this list available on the Internet.
